There are #squadgoals . . . and then there’s Givenchy creative director Riccardo Tisci’s self-described “girl gang,” which upon closer examination is one of the biggest R&B girl groups waiting to happen. Alicia Keys. Ciara. Erykah. Beyoncé. Amongst these soulful songbirds, there are 39 Grammys and each can count herself muse to Tisci, a dyed-in-the-wool R&B aficionado. Just imagine the bedlam if he convinced them all to perform at the after-party for Givenchy’s first New York show tonight!

Pinpointing his humble Southern Italian roots as the connection with black American musical culture, Tisci once said, “I’m not one to listen to classical music. I am very much for what is American . . . I love the Bronx. I love hip-hop and R&B.” He has famously brought this passion for the music over into his designs for the French house, pulling inspiration from the bold, brassy, and expressive personal style of today’s biggest chart-topping performers. Just as Audrey Hepburn influenced Hubert with her timely femininity, Beyoncé’s Met Gala “naked dress” and Erykah Badu’s custom Givenchy suiting speak to the stylish, fearless women who are influencing fashion right now.

With less than twelve hours to go before showtime, we take a look at how Tisci fell under the spell of America and R&B’s biggest sweethearts.

How they became fashion BFFs: After the R&B singer and fashion designer met backstage at a Fashion Rocks charity performance in Brazil in 2009, a bond quickly formed between the two, and the designer had found his muse.

The first project they worked on:
Attending his Spring 2010 couture show, Ciara sat front row next to Kanye West, visited the store’s boutique, and attended a soiree in her honor.

Nickname for Riccardo: Ciara often affectionately refers to her “brother from another mother” as “Pappa Ricky” and dubbed the designer her one year old, Future’s, “Uncle Ricky.”

Givenchy style:
Ciara can be found on red carpet after red carpet in Tisci’s designs, from his streetwise menswear to his embellished couture gowns. She once declared, “I must have had over a hundred or so Givenchy looks over the years!” The Italian creative’s designs force the Atlanta-bred performer to take risks and their relationship helped her develop a “mental fashion Rolodex.”

Ciara’s big Givenchy red carpet look: Ciara also revealed, “One of my favorite [Givenchy] dresses of all time, which I wore to the MTV Video Music Awards, was from his couture collection that unfortunately he no longer does. It was [a look] we went back in the catalog [to find]. He does a lot of what I gravitate toward.”
